Since we are looking for things that will set us apart, how about we make the stages more interactive to the players. Have there be levers, buttons, chains to pull/kick/punch to produce effects centric to the stage. Have some stages be turnable like in Fez (players would have to jump up on new walls to get back into the area. Be able to pick up some of the terrain(boulders, shrubs, ice blocks) and throw it around.

I'm definitely a fan of transforming stages (Delfino Plaza and PictoChat were two of my favorites back in my Brawl days). Plus so long as their transformations aren't too silly they can still be considered counterpicks (I'll admit that Picto was pretty dumb sometimes). Different ways to activate traps or platforms could be cool, as well as turning stages. By able to be picked up do you mean they'd be like items? I just rewatched the trailer for Aces Wild earlier today and you could launch certain level parts by hitting them with strong attacks, perhaps that could be a part of it?
